Sinulog

The meaning of Sinulog is the movement of water current. It becomes a traditional dance which is accompanied by the sound of drums. The dance is done by two steps forward and one step backward as if it were a stream of water.

Before the Spaniards came to Cebu, the locals showed their respect and adoration through traditional dance of wooden gods they call Anitos. On April 7, 1521 Magellan arrived in Cebu and planted a crucifix on the coast. In addition to the beginning of the Spanish colonization in Philippines, Spaniards also brought Christianity into the land of the Philippines. After that, he gave the holy baby as a baptism gift to Hara Amihan (Queen Juana), wife of the chief. At that time, about 800 local people received the baptism of faith and become Catholic.

This event is often used as foundation for most Sinulog dances, which presents the coming of the Spaniards and the integration of Catholic faith and traditional dance.

One of the famous Sinulog dances is the Queen Juana who was holding the Santo Niño in her arms and using it to bless her people who are often worried by sickness caused by demons and other evil spirits.
